The context

Bank of Kigali, Rwanda’s largest national bank, sought to improve internal efficiencies by developing a robust internal tool for managing its growing operations. The bank needed a platform that would streamline internal processes, reduce manual work, and enhance overall productivity. We were engaged to design and develop this internal tool, ensuring it met the specific needs of Bank of Kigali’s staff.

The problem

The bank's internal processes were hindered by outdated tools that were inefficient and time-consuming. This led to operational bottlenecks and inconsistencies in service delivery. The challenge was to create an intuitive, efficient, and scalable tool that would address these issues. Another challenge was the complexity of the internal processes; it was critical to understand this due to business critical nature of the application.

The objective

The primary objective was to design an internal tool that streamlined Bank of Kigali’s internal operations, making it easier for staff to manage daily tasks. The tool needed to be user-friendly, reduce the complexity of processes, and improve overall efficiency across departments. Focusing on improving user interface elements would ensure that the staff can navigate the platform with ease.

The result

  • Improved the efficiency & consistency of internal processes, with the ability to complete complex tasks quicker than before.
  • Reduced onboarding time for new staff members.
  • Positive staff feedback on the ease of use and effectiveness of the tool.
  • Successful deployment of the tool, with widespread adoption among staff.

I was sceptical about working with a team in London who wouldn’t be able to embed themselves into our teams. However, it’s been productive and the team now know things about BK that we didn’t know about ourselves. Having a partnership like this one where people understand how important design is in everything we do is really going to change our business.

Diane Karusisi
CEO, Bank of Kigali

The approach

  • Mapped out existing workflows to identify areas of inefficiency.
  • Conducted user research to understand the specific needs and pain points of the bank’s staff.
  • Created user stories and personas.
  • Designed an intuitive interface focused on simplicity and ease of use.
  • Created a comprehensive design system.
  • Worked closely with Bank of Kigali’s IT department to ensure seamless integration with existing systems.
  • Conducted user testing with staff to refine the tool based on real-world feedback.
