Scaling your team is pointless if people aren’t pulling in the same direction. It isn’t just about more hands on deck, it’s ensuring every contribution drives impact. But it’s not easy.  

Here are 5 ways to align your team for success:

1. Build a unified team culture 👯

As teams grow, culture and alignment can fragment.

  • Communicate the vision to nurture a shared sense of purpose
  • Every member should have individual goals connected to the product goals
  • Use show & tells for teams to share their work’s impact on the product
  • Check the pulse of team buy-in and understanding of the vision through surveys

2. Stay flexible to change 🤸‍♀️

Remain fluid as the market, user needs and company priorities shift.

  • Allow caveats when communicating to stakeholders, as things may change
  • Proactively communicate shifts in priorities and explain their context
  • Empower product teams to make decisions based on the expected outcomes
  • Invite the team to problem solve how the product should react to these changes

3. Focus on impact, not tasks ⚖️

Motivated teams know how their work contributes to the bigger picture.

  • Use visual tools like impact maps to track different teams’ contributions to outcomes
  • Highlight work that’s making the most impact to boost motivation & focus
  • Identify areas where resources need to shift for better results

4. Encourage team autonomy to drive accountability 💪

Give teams the freedom to take ownership and accountability for their results.

  • Create smaller pods responsible for specific goals (e.g. user engagement, onboarding)
  • Allow teams to make decisions within their remit, in alignment with the vision

5. Foster leadership qualities at all levels 🫡

Leadership qualities at all levels can drive a motivated, productive and successful team.

  • Encourage leadership behaviours like ownership and accountability at every level
  • Implement a framework that encourages these qualities and reward these behaviours
  • Assign ownership of specific product outcomes to inspire accountability
