Context

Rolec Services is the UK’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicle (EV) charging points, working with installers responsible for fitting and supporting EV charging products.

As Rolec expanded its digital offering, the business identified an opportunity to launch a new self-serve portal for installers - a single destination to support product implementation, documentation, and ongoing service needs. This marked a shift towards more scalable, digital-first operations.

The problem

Rolec had not historically embedded design into its product development process, with a development-led product culture and creating risk as the business scaled its digital services.

  1. Product scalability risk: Without a design system or user-centred approach, the new self-serve portal risked becoming inconsistent, hard to maintain, and costly to evolve.

  2. Competitive pressure: The lack of design maturity was feared that, over time, may make it easier for competitors to close the gap.

  3. Operational inefficiency: Design and development debt would accumulate, increasing delivery effort and ultimately impacting the bottom line.

The result

In a short, fixed timeframe, Rolec gained a clear, scalable design foundation to support the launch and growth of its installer portal.

  • A comprehensive design system, enabling consistent, accessible UI and reducing future design and development effort.

  • Clear, production-ready UI designs for key screens, demonstrating how the portal could evolve with confidence.

  • Improved delivery efficiency, allowing the development team to focus on building components and product functionality as the business grows.

  • Increased confidence across teams, with a shared understanding of how good design practice supports business objectives.

The result was a strong design foundation so development teams could save time and resources, and supported Rolec’s move towards more scalable digital services.

“We engaged DPP to help kick-start a greenfield project by building a component system and some example screens.

The work produced was a highly professional standard, tailored to suit our product requirements and design preferences. Communication was great on all fronts and the development team here at Rolec are excited to take these designs into production.”

Laying the foundations for a scalable product?

We help teams create design systems and UX patterns that reduce delivery risk and support growth.

The approach

Our approach combined stakeholder alignment, user-centred definition, and system-led design to create a scalable foundation for Rolec’s self-serve platform.

  • Stakeholder sessions to align on business objectives, explore UI direction, and agree how the portal should support installers and internal teams.

  • Definition of core personas and Jobs-To-Be-Done, followed by mapping and prioritisation of key user flows and screens to focus effort on the most important journeys.

  • Design of responsive, page-level UX/UI for key screens across desktop and mobile, demonstrating how the visual language could flex across different use cases and future requirements.

  • Creation of a scalable design system, covering colour, typography, layout, and interaction patterns, alongside a comprehensive component library to ensure consistency and reduce future design and development effort.

  • Delivery of production-ready designs within a 12-day timeframe, enabling the development team to move quickly into build with confidence.
